Breeding Your Mare With Cooled Transported Semen

  1. The mare should be initially prepared as if you were going to send her to Haverty Ranch. For instance, 16 hours of light, uterine culture, and/or biopsy, etc.
  2. When you or your veterinarian determine your mare's first day of heat, contact Haverty Ranch (preferably by FAX) immediately to put us on notice.
  3. Have your veterinarian follow follicle progression by rectal palpation on a daily basis.
  4. When the mare is approximately 24 hours from ovulating, contact Haverty Ranch (preferably with our standard semen order form). You will be notified of our standard breeding/collection days.
  5. Haverty Ranch will ship one or two doses of semen, depending on our supply. One dose will contain approximately 1 billion motile sperm cells.
  6. When the semen arrives DO NOT open the container until the vet arrives and is ready to inseminate the mare. In other words, have her caught, palpated and prepped prior to opening the container!
  7. Remove the semen from the shipping container and inseminate the mare with the entire dose. DO NOT warm the semen prior to putting it in the mare!
  8. If your shipping container is not disposable in type, return it IMMEDIATELY to the stud farm. Bio Flite containers should also be returned but can be returned via the least expensive carrier.
  9. Have your mare pregnancy checked at 14-18 days after she ovulates, and notify Haverty Ranch (preferably by FAX) immediately on her pregnancy status.
  10. Hopefully, this procedure is straight forward and easily understood. Please feel free to advise Haverty Ranch of your concerns and questions.
