Kallion Farms Spring 2008 Opportunities Production Sale

On Saturday, May 17, 2008 a crowd of approximately 350 people attended the Kallion Farms Spring 2008 Opportunities Production Sale in College Station, Texas. Cattle sold to six states, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Florida, along with two countries, Australia and Costa Rica.

Bred females averaged $2,720, exposed females averaged $2,306, and the open ready to breed females averaged $1,960. Breeding age bulls averaged $2,341, and the show heifer prospects averaged $2,800. A total of 220 head of Brahmans averaged $2,083.

The high selling lot was Mr. Mendel de Kallion 617, purchased by Vic Deguara of Savawnah Ranch of Queensland, Australia for $11,000. Mr. Deguara also purchased the high selling female Miss Kallion 1129 for $7,000.

The bidding was very active and the demand for these outstanding genetics was very high. Over 190 head of females sold and the breakdown is as follows: the top third of the heifers averaged $2,926, the middle third of the heifers averaged  $1,942, and the lower third of the heifers averaged $1,644.

All of the buyers were pleased with the quality of the cattle and felt they were able to purchase the kind of cattle they needed for their programs – either purebred or commercial F-1 production.

On Friday night before the sale, Dr. Roger Hunsley addressed the crowd on the Practical Application of Gene Markers and Feed Efficiency data for today’s cattleman. His presentation was very informative and enjoyed by everyone present.

The evening meal consisted of steaks from Kallion Farms Brahman steers demonstrating the difference in tenderness and the great improvement Kallion Farms has made in their breeding program. Guests had the opportunity to taste test samples of steaks on Friday night and again at the Saturday noon meal to determine the tenderest steak. The chance to win a free female pregnancy from one of the top three donors at Kallion Farms was offered to the guests with the correct answer. John Allen, Manager of J & R Farms in Cabot, Arkansas and Lawrence Charanza of Kurten, Texas, were the winners.

This sale was managed by Broken Triangle Cattle Company LLC of Caldwell, Texas and the auctioneer was Leo Casas III of Beeville, Texas. Guest Ranches included 3-S Brahmans of Magnolia, Texas and H. Troppy, Inc. from Raymondville, Texas.
