Marcus Shackelford of Rocking S Ranch in Wauchula, Florida will present the award. <\/span><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">Born in Bay City, Texas on April 14, 1911, Ted was the son of Joe and Pearl Mangum of Matagorda County. He attended the Bay City School and graduated from the Pattie Waelder High School in Victoria, Texas. He later attended Victoria Junior College.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" title=\"Page 14\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 14\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 6\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>On February 15, 1936, he married Janie Hudgins, the daughter of Walter Hudgins of Hungerford, Texas. Ted Mangum was a devoted family man and father. He had one son \u2013 Walter Joe, and three daughters &#8211; Karen, Sarah and Hollis.<\/p>\n<p>Ted owned and operated a ranch southwest of Bay City and raised commercial cattle until his father-in-law convinced him to get into the registered Brahman business. Ted sold<br \/>\nhis commercial herd for $10 to $20 per head and borrowed additional money from the Houston Agricultural Credit Corporation, a livestock lending company, and bought a top herd of Brahman cows at $100 per head from the Jake Reitz Estate herd. This purchase was made in 1937 and Ted joined the American Brahman Breeders Association in February of 1938.<\/p>\n<p>Ted created the Mangum Division of J.D. Hudgins which carried the XL brand on the front right shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>The Mangum Division was known for producing superior herd bulls. According to Brahman Historian Marcus Shackelford, Mangum bred \u201cbigger cattle\u201d in terms of both frame size and popularity. People would travel great distances to buy a Mangum bull. His cattle were successful on the show circuit and his animals rose to the tops of the Register of Renown from its early years. +JDH Ellery M Manso 363 ranked second behind 3W Ranches\u2019 Sugarland\u2019s Rexcrata 1 bull, and the Mangum-bred JDH Miss Didor Manso 14 topped the registry for several years. One of his Register of Renown females, +JDH Lady Ellery Manso 651, was the female used in the ABBA Standard of Excellence pencil drawing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 8\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>According to an old Brahman Journal, the breeder was \u201cknown to most as Mr. Ted, he was quick to lend a helping hand or words of encouragement to any breeder; even the rankest beginner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, it is no surprise that in he was elected a director of the Brahman Association in 1962 and continued to serve as one until his death in 1979.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Ted was a quarter horse breeder and he owned some top bloodlines. The former president of the American Quarter Horse Association, David Perkins of Louisiana, bought his first registered Quarter Horse stallion from Ted in 1949 for $250. Perkins expressed that he thought it was one of the first registered Quarter Horses in the State of Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>The great Brahman breeder passed away on November 9, 1979. He had a heart attack while working with his Brahman cattle. Following his death, most of his herd was dispersed. However, in 2009, Ted\u2019s grandson Michael Goudeau started the J.D. Hudgins &#8211; Goudeau Division and brought back the XL shoulder brand. Goudeau was able to acquire two cows from the original Mangum lines and built the rest of his herd using various lines from other J.D.
