For the first three years they brought F1 Brahman x Hereford cattle but after that they brought open Brahman heifers too. These shiny heifers would top the sale. If the average was $1500, they would bring $3500-4000.”

J. Henry Novak and Sons ranch is a family-run, foundation Brahman operation. Henry and Mary Catherine have been married 69 years and have continued the ranching lifestyle of Henry’s parents, A. E. and Carrie Novak started back in 1944.

According to an article that ran in the 1998 August TBJ issue, Henry’s parents were “Danbury, Texas farmers and ranchers who managed to raise a family and establish a strong ranching and farming operation amid the many ups and downs associated with early Texas agriculture. Along the way they passed their love for their land, cattle and way of life on to son Henry.”

While farming tended to dominate all the Novak enterprises, their first love was always the cattle. One of Henry’s many memories include a favorite saying of his father’s, “Don’t ever get rid of them cattles, they always make little ones, which always have a value!”

Henry and Mary Catherine raised their sons, Larry and Terry, as he was raised — with Brahman cattle. Both sons were active junior members.

In the 1998 article, Henry said that the type of Brahman popular in the show ring is constantly changing, but he never let that influence his breeding program. He went on to say that he had to produce Brahman cattle with meat and lots of bone to be able to sell to the commercial cattlemen in his area. In addition, he sold many cattle internationally.

Henry served on the ABBA Board of Directors for decades and acted as Director Emeritus for several years as well, while Mary Catherine, was very active in the Ladies of the ABBA and AJBA organizations. Although, the couple has withdrawn from Brahman events some over the last few years due to health issues; they remain beloved friends of the breed.

The 2019 ABBA National F1 and TBA Brahman Female Sale will be dedicated to long-time ABBA members Henry and Mary Catherine Novak.

[18,19

0":"post-10785","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-american-brahman-breeders","8":"category-brahman-news
["GET
