Fred had been a member of ABBA since 1956 and he was known to have gentle Brahman cattle. Schindler is very proud of the females that came with his grandfather’s herd, but like many young breeders he had a desire to grow and improve the foundation of his herd. He wanted to buy cattle from other breeders that would make a positive impact on his herd.

Looking back now, Schindler wishes he would have stayed with more of his grandfather’s females and that line of cattle, as he really had a great foundation. But sometimes young breeders think they need something ‘new’. The problem is that ‘new blood’ does not necessarily correlate to better cattle. He found that he had some disposition, fertility, and udder quality issues when he started trying to ‘breed up’ his cattle and it took a while to work through those problems.

During the nineties Schindler felt like he had learned from his past mistakes and he was ready to move forward in his breeding program. That is when he started to use artificial insemination from bulls at Brushy Creek Custom Sires. Those AI calves were able to improve his herd and Todd started to better understand the impact of specifically choosing certain genetics. Toward the end of the 2000s Schindler’s herd was more productive, and he felt like the cattle finally looked good on the outside.

Around this time, a good friend of Schindler’s, Dennis Kaspar of Augustus Ranch Land and Cattle, asked Todd to join a study group trying to find ways to sell meat directly to the end user. Schindler tested his whole herd with GeneSeek, now known as Neogen, for tenderness, marbling, muscling, and RFI since these were the factors that were identified as the most important in the study. When he got the results, he was excited about the accuracy, but disappointed in the grades assigned to his animals. While his cattle scored well for heifer pregnancy rate, docility, REA, and RFI he felt like he could do better. When he looked at the tenderness and marbling scores, even though they were well in line with other Brahman cattle that had been tested, Schindler wanted to see if he could improve on these as well.

“The first bull that I tested, he tested great on a lot of factors, but tested poorly on marbling and tenderness,” Schindler said. “After that I knew I had to find a better bull.”

After receiving these scores, Schindler decide to challenge himself to advance his Brahman carcass results. He started doing research and dug into past Brahman carcass contest results. Through his research, he found bulls and bloodlines that appeared to have better carcass traits. With this data, Schindler tried to purchase cattle that he felt could help his program. While trying to build the herd he came upon a bull owned by Partin & Partin Heart Bar Ranch and Caballo Rojo Ranch.

A couple of days after visiting with the owner of Caballo Rojo Ranch, Carl Lambert, he bought several head from Caballo Rojo Ranch. As he got them home, he pulled genetic samples and sent them off. The cows were a little above average for the carcass traits, but some of the calves were way above average on their tenderness scores. With the help of Lambert, Schindler bought the bull, CRR MR SUGAR 142 that sired the calves with better markers. When ‘Sugar’ was tested, he came back as a perfect 10 on the tenderness score. To thank Lambert for his help, Schindler wanted Lambert as a part owner with a semen interest.

The next breeding season, ‘Sugar’ excelled. His following calf crop was tested, and the tenderness scores were an improvement over the dams’ scores. In order to prove the score, Schindler decided to enter the 2017 Brahman Carcass Test. He had three steers tested with an average WBSF score of 6.61 lbs, well below the 8 lbs most consider to be restaurant quality, the top steer had a WBSF score of 5.51 and achieved one of the highest contest ratios ever at 123.46. Consequently, Schindler won the award for the High Indexing Steer of the 2017 ABBA Carcass Contest.

“It’s my belief that for a bull to be great he must produce sons that are better than him,” explained Schindler. “I am excited as this may have happened with ‘Sugar’s’ son, TS MR TOJO SAMPSON 123.”

With a tenderness score of 7 and a maternal grandsire known for marbling, ‘Sampson’ could be even better than his sire as he brought home three ABBA Carcass Contest wins for TS Cattle Company. Schindler received the High Indexing Steer award, Premier Sire Group award and the Top Producer award in the 2019 ABBA Carcass Contest and all the steers Schindler entered in the test were sired by ‘Sampson’. The High Indexing steer, TS 231, achieved an index of 113.73, but more importantly to Schindler, had a marbling score of 600.

“We are very happy with the individual steer award,” Schindler stated. “But we are even more excited to have the lowest WB Shear Force avg. of 4.83 lbs for the 5 steers, while having 5 of the top 7 Ribeye Areas/ CWT.”

Schindler’s goal of creating the best Brahman carcass possible has allowed for other Brahman breeders to follow his lead. The research and time he took to breed the best cattle possible is one of the many reasons he is this year’s Performance breeder.

Todd and his wife Jo Ann started their own herd in 1984 after purchasing a few heifers from Schindler’s grandfather, Fred Schindler…

[16,18,19

0":"post-12830","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-abba-news","8":"category-american-brahman-breeders","9":"category-brahman-news
["GET
