Tras 4 años de negociaciones finalmente se consolidó con la Texas A&M International Beef Academy la presentación en México de los temas relevantes que se discuten en el Beef Cattle Short Course que se celebra cada año en College Station, sede de la Universidad de Texas A&M.
Se requirió de la participación y buena voluntad de muchas personas que adoptaron la propuesta que nació durante el Rodeo de Houston y se amarró en una cena arropada con unos estupendos Ribeye, y el trato sellado con un apretón de manos y un brindis con herradura blanco, una combinación por demás adecuada para menesteres como ese.
Resulta ser que, hasta antes de esa cena, la Universidad había estado buscando la manera de realizar en México una parte de lo que tienen como encomienda, la divulgación científica en beneficio del sector para el cual nació en el año de 1876 como una institución que serviría para educar a los interesados en la agricultura y mecánica, ambas, en el sentido amplio de la palabra.
Hoy la institución educa a 74,829 alumnos de 140 carreras, ofrece 177 maestrías y 94 doctorados y cuenta en su haber, con 2 premios Nobel.
Sirva la breve explicación para entender la certificación de los profesores que disertaron en el programa de Campeche, por cierto, todos ellos con grado de Doctor.
Las conferencias se llevaron a cabo en el magnífico Centro de Convenciones Ah Kim Pech de la Ciudad de Campeche, ubicado frente al mar, a unas cuadras de distancia de varios hoteles y restaurantes y se realizaron el sábado 13 de mayo 2023 con la asistencia de 523 personas que formaron una audiencia heterogénea muy interesante porque había desde estudiantes de Medicina Veterinaria, Técnicos Agropecuarios, Profesores, Investigadores y desde luego ganaderos de todas edades, por cierto muy participativos, lo que habla de la necesidad de tener información sobre lo que está pasando.
Es importante no perder de vista que este ejercicio se denomina como “Escuela para Ganaderos” lo que significa que algunos de los temas pudieran ser del dominio de algunos de los asistentes, pero, nunca está por demás dar una repasada.
Platicando con los profesores invitados, se comentó sobre el interés general de los asistentes, quienes se aguantaron hasta el final, más o menos 7 de la noche después de escuchar 12 conferencias sobre nutrición, calidad de la carne, herramientas genéticas, reproducción, programas de salud y manejo de pastizales, todo relacionado con ganado desarrollado en zonas tropicales y subtropicales.
Tuvimos asistentes de muchos estados del país, desde luego de Guatemala, Belice, Brasil, Honduras y uno de la República Islámica de Irán y a partir de este evento, se convino participar en uno similar que organiza el Grupo de Ganadería Integral en la Ciudad de Guatemala los días 27 y 28 de octubre en el II Congreso Internacional de Genética Y Tecnología de la Carne que se llevará a cabo en el Centro de Convenciones AGEXPORT en donde habrá 4 conferencias Magistrales de Doctores de la Universidad, con temas distintos a los expuestos en Campeche.
Los créditos para lograr este objetivo se le deben atribuir a varios personajes que representan a instituciones, tanto públicas como privadas de gran calidad y a empresas del ramo y asociaciones ganaderas especializadas, específicamente La Angus, Charollais Herd Book de México, la Simmental-Simbrah- Simmangus que han entendido que el éxito en eventos así, no nace y vive de una sola mente, sino que es fruto del intercambio de ideas y reparto de responsabilidades, por eso, sin su asistencia hubiera sido prácticamente imposible realizar este programa, lo mismo sucede con la industria, el foro resultó ejemplar por la organización y contenido de las conferencias, quienes participaron en el área comercial, lo hicieron con gran profesionalismo, lo que habla de una actitud de servicio y compromiso para con el sector.
La pregunta que muchos se hicieron fue ¿Por qué en Campeche? Y la respuesta es sencilla, el equipo de funcionarios de gobierno encargados del área de atracción de capitales y turismo es de lo más eficiente que he visto en mucho tiempo, los compromisos, facilidades, calidad y profesionalismo de los proveedores es insuperable, amén de que el estado está situado estratégicamente y hay facilidades para llegar desde Yucatán, Tabasco, Chiapas y Centro América y con vuelos desde la CDMX que por cierto se llenaron y hubo quien voló a Mérida y manejó hora y media en una muy buena y segura carretera hasta Campeche. El interés que despertaron estas conferencias, la satisfacción de quienes asistieron y las recurrentes solicitudes de que se repitan, obliga a que así sea, en eso estamos.
After 4 years of negotiations some of the relevant and important beef industry topics discussed at the Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course, held every year in College Station, were finally presented in México, at the Texas A&M International Beef Academy on Saturday, May 13, 2023 in the city of Campeche.
This endeavor required the participation and good will of many people who adopted the proposal after the idea was born during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The deal was sealed with a handshake and a toast over a dinner of some great rib-eye steaks.
One of the missions of Texas A&M University is to serve and to educate those interested in agriculture, both in the United States and internationally. Today the institution educates 74,829 students from a number of countries in 140 careers, offering 177 master’s degrees and 94 doctorates and it even has two Nobel prizes to its credit. So, even before the deal making dinner, the University had been looking for a way to carry out their mandate to educate those interested in agriculture and the scientific approach to the industry in México.
The conference was held at the magnificent Ah Kim Pech Convention Center in the city of Campeche, located in front of the sea, a few blocks away from several hotels and restaurants. It was attended by 523 people who formed a very interesting heterogeneous audience because they ranged from veterinary medicine students, agricultural technicians, professors, researchers and of course farmers of all ages. It was made clear by the number of participants and engagement of the attendees the need to have information and educational conferences of this type.
It is important not to lose sight of the fact that this event is called “School for Ranchers” which means that some of the topics might already be mastered by some of the attendees, but it never hurts to review certain topics and practices again. The invited professors gave lectures on nutrition, meat quality, genetic tools, reproduction, breeding programs, pasture health and management, all related to livestock developed in tropical and subtropical zones. It was a long day for attendees, but most stayed until the very end at 7:00 PM to learn from the professor’s presentations. There were attendees from many states within México, as well as from Guatemala, Belize, Brazil, Honduras and one from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The question that many asked was why in Campeche? And the answer is simple, the team of government officials in charge of the area of capital attraction and tourism is the most efficient I have seen in a long time. The commitments, facilities, quality and professionalism of the providers was second to none, in addition to the fact that the state is strategically located and there are facilities to get there from Yucatan, Tabasco, Chiapas and Central America. Those who flew to Mérida only had to drive an hour and a half on a very good and safe highway to Campeche.
The interest aroused by this conference, the satisfaction of those who attended, and the recurring requests that they be repeated was a tribute to the need for these types of educational events in México and Central America. Consequently we will be producing and providing these types of educational and scientific conferences in the future.
The credit for achieving this event in Campeche is attributed to various people who represent high-quality public and private institutions and companies in the industry and specialized livestock associations. Specifically the Angus Association of México, Charolais Association of México, Simmental-Simbrah- Simmangus of México, who all understood that success in events like this are not born from a single mind, but are the result of the exchange of ideas and sharing of responsibilities.
Therefore, without their assistance it would have been practically impossible to carry out this program. The forum was exemplary due to the organization and content of the conferences, those who participated in the commercial area, and those who were speakers, as they all participated with great professionalism, which speaks of an attitude of service and commitment to the sector. The next conference is fast approaching, as it was agreed to participate in a similar conference organized by the Integral Livestock Group in Guatemala City on October 27 and 28, 2023 at the II International Congress of Meat Genetics and Technology. This event will take place at the AGEXPORT Convention Center where there will be four professors from Texas A&M University, with different topics from those that were discussed in Campeche.
