What type of cattle are you using in your beef program? We use Gray Brahman females with Hereford and Angus bulls to create F1s. We then use those F1 females and put Angus bulls on them to create the steers we use in our beef program. So those steers are either 1/2 Angus, 1/4 Hereford and 1/4 Brahman or 3/4 Angus and 1/4 Brahman.
How do you market your branded beef operation? We market through social media and our website but mainly word of mouth.
Where is your product available for sale? Currently we have a website that you can order in bulk. We are in the process of building a retail store in Angleton, Texas, that we are hoping will be opened in September.
What cuts do you offer? What is the most popular? Currently we off er bulk – Quarters, Halves and Wholes. Once our retail store opens, we will then have individual cuts, bulk and box deal options available.
How is Brahman beef different than other beef? Brahman Beef is leaner than other beef.
Are there any negative preconceived notions about Brahman beef from buyers? I haven’t had any negative feedback on any of our beef. Even on our fullblood Brahmans, people love it.
How interested are people in buying Brahman beef? People love the fact they know where their beef comes from. They love that there are no hormones, additives or preservatives in our beef.
Are you retaining kill data to be used with other performance data in your herd? Not currently. We are in the process of building a feedyard to feed our own cattle, and with that, we are building facilities to collect weights and scan data on the cattle.
Please describe the biggest challenges of owning a branded beef operation. The biggest challenge we are having with our branded beef operation is losing lease land to owners selling out or leasing to solar farms, therefore taking away our ability to raise enough cattle to keep up with the demand. Less land equals a lower number of cattle we can raise.
