This year Rancho El Coposo is celebrating 50 years of excellence in breeding Brahman cattle.
Don Rafael Abarca Barragán acquired his first 25 hectares (62 acres) in 1975 in the municipality of Pánuco, Veracruz, Mexico where he started Rancho El Coposo.
He built the foundation of his breeding program with 100 head of females he acquired from the heirs of Guillermo Wilburn.
One day, he saw a bull in a butcher’s yard, and although he was told the animal was no good, it caught his attention, and he managed to buy it. The bull was RG Balón, the sire from which he started his ranch. He later acquired LCP Chilero from Leonel Casanova’s ranch.
In 1983, he started using artificial insemination. He incorporated worldrenowned sires including (+)JDH REMINGTON MANSO 784/2, (+)JJ DIDOR CRATA 389 and #AGG DIEZ PLUS I.A. 167/9. Ten years later, he imported a batch of females from Texas as well as two bulls, JDH ACOSTA MANSO 369 (a JDH BROSS MANSO 949/2 son) and DREAM BOY 100 PICASSO (a + JK SUGAR CRATA 45 son).
Rancho El Coposo genetics have been extremely successful in the show ring as well as the pasture. Over the years, the ranch has accumulated numerous National and International championship titles at Mexican livestock exhibitions in both Red and Gray Brahman divisions.
Rancho El Coposo genetics have crossed borders, in uencing herds in other countries. Bullseye Ranch of Burton, Texas purchased a herd sire from them – DAC MR COPOSO CROWN TE 16/6 – and have used him with much success. 16/6’s progeny have won multiple grand and reserve grand championships across the Southeastern United States. Currently, Rancho El Coposo is managed by Don Rafael Abarca Barragán’s son, Rafael Abarca Fernández with the third generation growing up around cattle and continuing their grandfather’s legacy.

En 1975, Don Rafael Abarca Barragán adquirió sus primeras 25 hectáreas (62 acres) en el municipio de Pánuco, Veracruz, México, donde inició Rancho El Coposo. Cimentó la base de su programa ganadero con 100 hembras que adquirió de los herederos de Guillermo Wilburn.
Un día, observó un toro en un rastro, y aunque le dijeron que no servía, le llamó la atención y logró comprarlo. Ese toro fue RG Balón, el semental con el que comenzó la historia del rancho. Posteriormente, adquirió a LCP Chilero, del rancho de Leonel Casanova.
En 1983 inició el uso de la inseminación artificial, incorporando sementales de renombre mundial como (+) JDH REMINGTON MANSO 784/2, (+) JJ DIDOR CRATA 389 Y #AGG DIEZ PLUS I.A. 167/9. Diez años más tarde importó un lote de hembras de Texas, así como dos toros: JDH ACOSTA MANSO 369 (hijo de JDH BROSS MANSO 949/2) y DREAM BOY 100 PICASSO (hijo de +JK SUGAR CRATA 45).
La genética de Rancho El Coposo ha destacado tanto en la pista de exposiciones como en el campo. A lo largo de los años, el rancho ha acumulado numerosos títulos nacionales e internacionales en exposiciones ganaderas de México, tanto en la división de Brahman Rojo como en la de Brahman Gris.
La influencia de su genética ha trascendido fronteras, impactando hatos en otros países. Bullseye Ranch, de Burton, Texas, adquirió de ellos un semental – DAC MR. COPOSO CROWN TE 16/6 – que ha sido utilizado con gran éxito. Su descendencia ha conquistado múltiples campeonatos y campeonatos reservados en el sureste de Estados Unidos. Actualmente, Rancho El Coposo es administrado por Rafael Abarca Fernández, hijo de Don Rafael Abarca Barragán, mientras la tercera generación crece entre el ganado, continuando el legado de su abuelo.
