STgenetics Brahman Championship Series; Evaluation Program

Feed efficiency has become one of the most critical economic and environmental indicators in modern cattle production. As feed costs continue to represent the largest expense in beef operations, identifying animals that can convert feed into weight gain more effectively is essential for profitability and long-term sustainability.

The Feed Efficiency Evaluation conducted in the Summer–Fall 2025 Brahman Performance Test was designed to measure these traits with precision, providing breeders with meaningful, data-driven insights into genetic potential. This evaluation focused on key performance metrics, most notably Residual Feed Intake (RFI), Average Daily Gain (ADG), and Carcass Merits.

By analyzing intake relative to expected consumption, the RFI metric allows us to identify cattle that gain more while eating less or maintain equal performance with reduced input. Such animals not only lower production costs but also contribute to reduced resource use and lower environmental impact.

Through rigorous monitoring, standardized feeding protocols, and advanced data analytics, this year’s evaluation highlights the genetic diversity and progress within the Brahman breed. The standout performers illustrate the breed’s growing potential to excel in feed efficiency without compromising growth, carcass quality, or adaptability.

SUMMARY OF THE TOP-PERFORMING ANIMALS

These animals achieved leading positions across Growth, Feed Efficiency, Carcass Merit, Feeder Profitability, and Sustainability; some of these animals are the highest ranking after HK and ST.

The Feeder Profit and Sustainability indices are based on industry-standard economic drivers. Feeder Profit Formula is Profit = Carcass Revenue – Input Costs – Fixed Cost.

Carcass revenue and input costs are influenced by: Carcass Weight (ADG), Marbling (IMF), Feed Efficiency, Yardage and Calf Cost. The Sustainability ranking emphasizes producing more pounds of product with fewer inputs. Profitable Sustainability is driven by Feed Intake, Days on Feed (ADG), and Pounds of Product Produced.
